The MGM Grand Detroit casino resort officially opened on October 3, 2007, although there had been a temporary casino open since July 1999. The resort includes the 400-room and suite MGM Grand Hotel which features plenty of upscale, casual, and quick bite dining options including a steakhouse by Wolfgang Puck. MGM Grand Detroit employs about 2,800 people. The other two casinos, MotorCity Casino Hotel and Greektown Casino-Hotel, have not announced any similar permanent layoff plans.

Wolfgang Puck has left the building at MGM Grand Detroit.

That means for the first time since its debut near Third & Michigan in 2007, the casino will have no celebrity chefs attached to any of its restaurants once Wolfgang Puck Steak completes its transition to become D. Prime later this month.

Puck, a culinary icon and Austrian-born progenitor of California cuisine, has had a restaurant in the Detroit casino since the permanent structure opened more than a decade ago, beginning with Wolfgang Puck Grille. When fellow California-based celebrity chef Michael Mina pulled out of the Detroit casino in 2012, Puck shifted into the spaces where Mina had run SaltWater and Bourbon Steak, introducing his own upscale steakhouse and a more casual pizzeria in their places. (The pizzeria shuttered in 2017.)

Now 71, Puck appears to be reorganizing his culinary empire closer to his Los Angeles home. In addition to the Detroit location, Wolfgang Puck Express in Disney Springs, Florida, is also closing permanently. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reports that Puck is planning to open two new restaurants on Sunset Boulevard this fall.

Multiple high-profile Detroit chefs have made their way through the Puck kitchen, most notably Marc Djozlija of Wright & Co. and Peterboro fame, who spent 15 years working for Puck in Las Vegas and Atlantic City before coming back to open Puck's Detroit restaurants.

Few details are known about D. Prime, the planned replacement for Wolfgang Puck Steak, but David Tsai, president of MGM Resorts Midwest, promised a 'modern twist on flame-grilled steaks and seafood, signature cocktails and a fresh atmosphere' in an emailed statement.

'This contemporary, upscale restaurant and lounge is a no nonsense original take on ... a modern Detroit steakhouse,' the statement said.

A representative confirmed the restaurant will be run by MGM Grand Detroit and is slated to debut in late October.

Detroit casinos are currently open at 15% capacity and with additional restrictive measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
